Are you looking for a workshop to bring to your chapter or your school district?

Did you know there are numerous organizations that provide job specific workshops for school employees?  These organizations also offer membership in their organization, which may provide salary enhancements.  Take a look and if your district does not participate in any of these organizations talk to your field rep about bargaining it into your contract.

School Nutrition Association

Did you know that many of our members are also members of the School Nutrition Association(SNA.)  The SNA “develops and encourages the highest standards in school foodservice and nutrition programs.”  They also provide professional development for their members.

The SNA offers certification for school nutrition employees.  They have set standards for education, training and work experience as conditions of being awarded certification.

Check out their website to see if this is an organization you should be a member of.  Our field reps will work with you and your district to get this program into your district and your collective bargaining agreement.

 

School Bus Driver Instructor Training Programs

Are you a bus driver thinking that maybe you would like to become a driver trainer? Are you aware that the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction offers courses to do just that?  PSE has a lot of members who have taken this course and not only have they become driver instructors but some have also go on to become transportation supervisors. 

On OSPI's website you can download a registration form for application to their Driver Instructor training course.

Have you visited the Washington Association of Pupil Transportation web site? You can find information for drivers, mechanics and supervisors.

W.A.P.T., O.S.P.I., and Central Washington University jointly offer a three-year “Pupil Transportation Management Program.” 

Check out the WAPT website for information on job openings, a mechanics ‘bulletin board' and other things happening in the world of student transportation.

 

National Association of Educational Office Professionals

 

The NAEOP and its Washington affiliate WAEOP, believe that ‘continuing education of educational office professionals is essential to cope with rapidly changing conditions in the profession.'

 

Numerous school secretaries, office administrators and administrative assistants all throughout PSE belong to WAEOP.  Several contracts have salary enhancements in them that account for people who achieve certification.

“The National Association of Educational Office Professionals (NAEOP) provides the opportunity for members to enhance their professional competencies through academic programs, conferences, and institutes. These incentive activities enable the members to take progressive steps to their desired professional growth level.

Successful completion of a NAEOP approved program qualifies the member for one or more of the following Professional Standards Program certificates:

Each certificate is based on requirements in three areas: education, experience, and professional activity.”

 

Para-educators/Instructional Assistants/Teacher Assistants

Did you know that the Educational Service Districts are increasing the number of workshops they offer classified employees on student and classroom management?  Is your district taking advantage of these offerings and bringing the instruction to your school or school district?

ESD 112 out of Vancouver offers classes on working with students with Autism, Mathematics and Team building, just to name a couple.  Check out their web site for more information. 

ESD 123 in Pasco also offers many of these same courses, along with other ESD's across the State. 

Classes and workshops are available on Assessments, Computers/Technology, Health, Fitness, Classroom Management, Excel, Digital Photography, Helping Struggling Readers, just to name a few.  

So when it is time for that in-service day and your district says they would love to have their classified employees attend a workshop, they just don't know where to find one, have them contact their local ESD!
