Cuts to education and health care threaten our state’s future. The recession has forced devastating cuts to vital public services. Our public schools and uni
versities are no exception. After trimming staff, implementing efficiencies in every department, and closing tax loopholes, our state was still forced to cut into core education and health services.
Initiative 1098 will raise $1 billion per year to help us build a more vibrant economy and better opportunities for our children. The wealthiest 3% of Washingtonians will pay an income tax, while the vast majority of Washingtonians will pay less. I-1098 makes common-sense improvements to our tax system.
Washington small businesses have been devastated by the recession. Yet now they must pay B&O taxes even when they’re losing money. By eliminating this tax on small businesses, I-1098 will make it easier for them to protect and create the jobs Washington needs, now and in the future.
I-1098 was not designed by state politicians. Instead, it was put together by a coalition of business, labor, and community leaders, including Bill Gates, Sr., who support a careful, balanced reform of the state’s tax system and better education and health services. That is why Initiative 1098 includes tough accountability provisions to ensure that middle-class families will pay les
s in taxes and all funds are spent efficiently and effectively.
PSE is proud to be a part of a large and diverse grassroots organization working hard to place I-1098 on the ballot this fall. We only have until June 25 to collect and verify signatures to qualify for the ballot.
